re: calculators
This is sadly true. When I was getting my MS in math, I had a TA ship and was often assigned to freshman calculus. There were questions like "compute the first derivative", "find the min/max points", "find the inflection points" etc. of a given function f(x). The final question was to draw the graph of f. There were a large number of students who had no idea how to do the first parts of the question, yet drew beautiful graphs from their graphing calculators for the last part from their graphing calculators. People are becoming subservient to their technology, and dumbed down as the give up thinking for themselves. Once we get to a tipping point (a decade away?), Skynet or its equivalent will put us out of our misery.
