Choice of OS
The Classmate is getting good reviews but there is little information about software. Building the Classmate in Portugal and customizing the experience for the language and locale is wonderful. Money is not simply leaving Portugal but being recycled somewhat.

I hope parents think about teaching children for the future rather than the past when they choose the OS. The cost is subsidized by government so the end user may not see a price differential but prices on Amazon.com are lower for the version with GNU/Linux. My experience with other GNU/Linux systems is that they are perfectly suitable for education, especially for young children who like their learning to come in a game. Older children will find the Classmate a bit small for easy typing. It is great that this project is part of a comprehensive plan to bring IT to education effectively unlike others that just dump machines into schools and hope for the best.
