physics is not a fundamental application of maths
Physics is the basis for understanding any physical phenomenon. I do not see any sense in studying biology w/o a strong physics curriculum, as w/o physics you will have a hard time understanding what happens in a living being. studying muscle w/o knowledge of chemistry o r newtonian laws is impossible - studying modecular biology without knowledge of molecules does not even sounds possible.

Physcis as you state at the end of your post, drove mathematics. mathematics history without physics would simply see their most active 2 centuries erased.
