Personally, if somebody left a diary at my house I would not read it, I would hide it away so that nobody else could read it, and deliver it back in the first instance.

What do people expect to gain from snooping? Control, that's all. It plays to their control issues, the only possible result being that they have "one over" the other person. To do what? Make some subtle or non-commital hints during an otherwise lovely evening down the pub?
