I'd think that unless ComSci is entrenched in schools initiatives like this conference will go the way of any other program that is outside the "core."

So, how to get it into the core? It would seem that CTE is on the way to being declared an "essential element" of K12 education. So, I'd suggest that the best way is to develop a comprehensive CTE elective pathway that encompassed ComSci alongside such as Engineering. Making it a part of a greater whole I believe would make it a good thing, much harder to "downsize" and flexible enough to tailor to individual community needs.
