Ah, so you admit that Sugar is limiting because it's essentially for children. Perhaps third world countries want exactly what first world countries have and that is to be adults.

"Only on a limited basis because our district has invested a fair amount of time and money into math and English software that requires Windows"

So there is a library of software that only runs on Windows or Macs. Microsoft is offering the $3 bundle with Windows XP and a non-crippled version of Microsoft Office 2003. That seems like a deal that's simply too good to pass up. See this video http://www.formortals.com/Home/tabid/36/EntryID/45/Default.aspx

To me, Sugar might look interesting for 3 to 7 year old but even there I would often prefer Windows because of the availability of applications.

"He?s right, but misses the real value of mesh: ad hoc collaboration in the absence of an access point"

But you're missing my point that you do NOT need a full 802.11s stack that jacks up hardware and development costs and power requirements to get ad hoc collaboration in the absence of an access point. 802.11s is specifically designed to turn laptops in to wireless repeaters; a function that you admit isn't practical. Ad hoc networking could be done without 802.11s support.
