Familiar or not, it's still XP.
That will be a huge achillies heel for MS. XP runs well on modest desktops and notebooks. Not fast, but well. Take the EEE, it can run XP, however, it is slower, and as you stated, the mandatory Anti-X suites are not factored into performance.

They have a problem, they are explicitly allowing the "exception" for very modest hardware configurations, the same ones that won't run it very well at all.

Aside: I laugh at the exceptions. Asus, stick a 1.2 GHz AMD in the machine, see how fast MS changes the exception limits.

With enough EEEs running Linux already in the wild, XP, for once in it's life, will have to measure up to the incumbent, the easy to use Xandros version or the custom installed with distro of choice by the user.

You yourself blogged about the extreme curiosity of the EEE, and the incredible ease of use of the EEE by the user. Where is that ease of use with XP in a UMPC? Xandros is still one touch update, XP is separate component. XP requires anti-malware. XP requires more HD space (at a premium on some models) and comes with very little software.

Compare to the EEE, with, well, a real Office Suite (sorry No Axe, gripe all you want, OO is great), skype client, burning, etc all with a few install clicks.

Yes, many geeks will go through the massive reconfiguration needed to get the same functionality on the Linux (up to where MS will let them, good look connecting to Active directory, etc), whereas this is all included in Linux.

Simply put, for the EEE at least, and others being directly optimized for Linux first and foremost, the horse has left the barn, word is out, and the reviews are phenominal. Head to Amazon to read them all.

You put it best of all.
Many manufacturers have taken to installing various flavors of Linux on these devices to minimize footprint, improve performance, and reduce costs on low-power, low-margin hardware.

Cheaper XP only helps (gotta love dumping and the DOJ right) on one of the three problems. Linux is as small as the vendor wants, includes anything they want, doesn't include anything they want, therefore has better performance and with the new kernels, will use less power than MS's 6 year old depreacted OS.

Yes, this will slow or forestall the inevitable, but Windows has no real OS that can go head to head on the UMPC. Inertia aside, that isn't a lot to really look forward to if you are an MS executive. In the end, the vendors want a UMPC that does everything the customer needs, not meets MS's needs to maintain market share.
