Squares with my experience
All of the really math-oriented people I've known went straight to the abstract forms and played with them. When presented with applications, they would go, "Oh? Well, if you insist ..." and then head back to playing with the abstract math.

You can argue the chicken or the egg here -- obviously, anyone who finds maths engaging enough to play with them when not required to is likely to do well regardless -- but that seems to be a common theme.

(Says /me, with one son who couldn't wait until I was out of a meeting to tell me that he'd just seen a poster announcing a class in knot theory.)
