I prefer appliance content filters
We're using the barracuda web filter 410 and it's been great at our school. It took some tweaking to get all the settings right but now it seems to be pretty effective. This is to the point where I hardly have to check in on it. I check once a week to be sure everything is ok but ive only had one or 2 incidents of "porn" slipping by with kids around. It's usually popup ads or one of those randomly generated web sites. Appliances are a little pricey, but they're worth it when you're talking about consolidation and centralization of resources and administration. I run 2 campuses and all network traffic hubs through our middle school where all our network security appliances are housed.
