Not just for presentation

Bear in mind that technology shouldn't just be used for presentation but also for interaction. That doesn't necessarily mean doing anything fancy - for example, cloze exercises that can be completed on-screen can be created using basic word-processing tools. But in that case, I think a key thing is you need to make sure that it's a resource that's capable of being shared.

I'm personally very wary of anything that offers to make adding multimedia easier as I think you can end up playing around with that too much without considering its worth. PowerPoint makes animating slides pretty easy, but the result of that is, in general, too much animation. And I've had plenty of students spend too much time playing with WordArt and not enough time actually writing.

Ultimately, the hardware and software you use really isn't a substitute for training in how and why to use it or - more importantly, I think - department- and school-wide sharing of resources and templates.
