You stated the issue.
First the kids learn the math and then they try to apply it your physics class. That's backwards

All through high school any math beyond 2+2 just lost me. Then in college (against all my advisors recomendations.) I decided to major in electronics. They tought the math as you needed it to go along with the science. I finally had a calculus instructor that told me I was wasting myself in electronics and should be majoring in physics:-) He was part right I shouldn't have been in electronics I should have been in comp sci. Oh well.

Since then I have always believeed that math is best taught as an adjunct to something else not as a subject in and of itself. Even in first grade, start teaching the kids about money, shopping, sales tax and such then give them the arithmetic as needed. Math as a tool is easy. As a stand alone subject:-(

Notice there's no technology in this. Probably why the kids fron Kurdistan do better.
