I've alwasy wondered why a group . . .
of Universities haven't gotten together to produce some sort of on-line database, ala Wikipedia, to do this very thing. They could restrict input to accredited organizations, with the documents subject to review by the member groups before being posted.

You could really do this for any subject, not just history. And any fees would go to maintaining the online presence (read equipment, server space, etc), and paying the people required to maintain it. . .
