Before you go pulling your hair out...
...try the latest NX Thin Client 3. There is no better Linux Thin Client out there--the best.

I've been using it for about three years now to reach my home gateway system.

Often I am in a rural area where cable broadband doesn't exist.
I fortunately have EDGE AT&T wireless access and so use my Nokia N95 to tether my laptop. It would be 'acceptable' to most folks with speeds of 260Kbps. What makes working in a remote area a pleasant experience is setting up a NX session to my home which has a broadband connection over EDGE.

Once connected to my home machine using NX, I essentially have all of the benefits of a broadband connection, at EDGE wireless speed! Too funny.

I chuckle every time I use it. BTW, it's free for personal use.

Don't take my word for it--give it a test and draw your own conclusions.

A few caveats,

o Be aware that there are three rpms to NX, which need to be installed in nxclient, nxnode, nxserver order to the server.

o If you are going to reach a machine behind a router, you must set up a port forward (22) to the LAN ip of the target machine.

o Make sure the host target machine has a copy of denyhosts.py installed as a daemon service as I guarantee you'll have 'ner-do-wells' all over the world trying to do full dictionary scans to break into your pc once they detect port 22 is open on the router's WAN ip.

o Set in your /etc/ssh/sshd_config PermitRootLogin to 'No'.
o Make 'strong' userid/passwords for your root and user logins

DenyHosts takes care of the hackers.

(I believe the EeePC runs a 'Debian' implementation.)

Take NX for a spin.
