XBox is cool but bleeds money. Microsoft sells it at loss. Developing products for large masses requires sacrifices in features, mindset (to appeal to everyone) and investment, which is what MS does with their money makers: Windows and Office

For Windows/Office to continue to dominate the world, they must be as cost-attractive and as plain and simple and accommodating as they can ever be. These are platforms used by everyone from the factory floor, to the financial centers to students, etc. Basic'ness is the key.
