Exactly right! The village in Indonesia where Negroponte distributed the XOs is not too different from where I teach community college students to use computers: limited electricity and more limited wireless; erratic transportation and lots of poverty. I wish OLPC would give out their laptops closer to home.
We're encouraging our students to use their Pell Grants to buy personal laptops with not much success. Even cheap machines are too expensive and fragile for their needs. Maybe XOs aren't the answer - I'm sending them the $400 to try one out - but we can no longer afford to turn scarce class room into computer labs, or buy expensive and too complex systems. Students deserve better.
