The rules
1) Quality is defined as degree of approximation to Microsoft.
2) Differences from Microsoft are by definition bad.
3) In case of a tie, Microsoft wins.

Some of us remember the mid-80s, when non-IBM manufacturers were trying to introduce 8086 or 80286-based systems. The problem was that these systems were, by definition, "not IBM-compatible" and lost to IBM systems. 8088-based systems were compatible, but by being identical gave up any potential advantages.

Then IBM came out with the PC-AT, which was quite a bit less compatible with the PC-XT than many of the OEM systems that preceded it -- but the definition of "compatible" changed, so customers bought IBM.

In the same way, the rules are set up so that it's impossible for Microsoft to lose in any comparison, because any competitor has to reproduce their bugs to compete.

That's why nobody will ever be able to compete against Microsoft, just as the PC industry will always be owned by IBM.
