- Xubuntu rocks!

Xubuntu is the OS for old machines. Less eye candy than Ubuntu and Edubuntu with Gnome, and Kubuntu with KDE. But man, do those old PIII's become fast again!
Tip: consider a PIII 450 Mhz, 192 MB RAM and 4 GB disk space a workable minimum for smooth and quick performance (never mind what they say on the Xubuntu website).
