Old wisdom...
Upgrading is always a bad idea, for any operating system under the sun. At worst you encounter strange problems, at best you always have some debris left on your system. A clean install is therefore always preferable.

I always say: if you want a new version of an operating system, do it wise, do it clean!

Tip: make clean upgrades easy and split your Linux in two: one partition for root, and a separate partition for /home. In /home you have not only your documents, but also all the configuration settings of all your applications (in hidden files). Thus, whenever you want to do an upgrade of your Linux, simply wipe the root partition and reinstall, leaving the /home intact. Easy as pie! happy
