Are we really going to ask our school children ? many, if not most, of whom carry cell phones and iPods,

I think you seriously underestimate the total number of kids who have access to none of that, pen and paper is a hardship, etc. You are right about some having lots, but there would be no interest in OLPC or equivalents here from various states and school boards (who were not actively solicited in the first place) if their kids already had the access.
