why not just include a rich Internet application on the disk? Or files to install on a web server? Or straight HTML, Javascript, etc., that can be run on any CD-ROM, whether it?s installed on a Mac, Linux box, or a brand new Vista desktop?

Because those don't go obsolete as fast. With platform-specific applications, your "100 Years of National Geographic" will have to be replaced when you buy another computer -- it's the gift that keeps on giving to the publishers.

One of the interesting consequences of having two physics majors for sons is that I got to compare their textbooks to my old ones. Quite a few are even the same title, later edition. In a great many cases, the content remains quite similar with only the problem sets changing over the course of 30 years. However, the edition numbers have revved over ten times in that period.

Hmmmm ....
