Problems solving problems
Excellent post which highlights a growing problem in a tech-saturated world. Real thinking and problem solving are hard work. Technology has largely alleviated the need to exert that effort, even (gasp!) in school. If children aren't exercised in this critical area, they will most certainly be weak, as you observed in a classroom full of bright students.

You've taken the first essential step: identifying the problem. Let's hope educators have a enough critical thinking skills remaining to solve it, because the next generation surely won't.
