Of course, OLPC is a success for the very reasons that you state -- it has generated competition among the for-profit players in the industry, which is the best way to bring costs down. It is unfortunate though that Nicholas Negroponte has now taken a defensive stance.

Instead of embracing, for the sake of underprivileged third-world school children, the market power of all those who would participate, he decides who can take part in OLPC and then criticizes those who think they can do a better job when they offer third-world governments a cost-effective alternative to the XO.
