It's perversion, but not the teacher's
The fact that this was treated the way it was (40 year sentence?!) by the schools, law enforcement and the judicial establishment illustrates just how far American society has sunk into sexual perversion.

Children want to know about everything -- it's a genetic thing that helps them grow up and become adults. One of the things they're most curious about is the place at the junction of their thighs that feels so good when they touch it. The fact that adults make such a fuss over it and generally refuse to talk about it, let alone let them see pictures about it, heightens the mystery and begins their journeys into their own perverted views of sex as they become adults.

Pornography is, generally, an unreal, distorted caricature of real sex and its complex emotional connotations. The ideal might therefore be for children to be shown something more realistic, but of course even that is now taboo given the dominance of religious fanatics in our political processes.

But it's hard to understand how it is that for children to be shown a silly caricature of an essential biological aspect of real life can rationally be seen as something deserving the teacher who showed the material (whether unwittingly or not, really) to be locked up for 40 years. Murderers and rapists frequently get less than that, after all.

Unless, of course, you factor in that our society is currently in the throes of some serious insanity. Then it starts to make sense.
