Lest you forget
Universities are not funded by the students, they are funded by parents, boosters, and the state (if it is a state institution). You are looking through rose colored glasses if you think we cater to the students needs realistically. We should, but we don't.

Also, no matter what setting, social networking sites have no place in an educational setting. Students today are not 18 when they come to college, a lot are 16 and 17, still not of legal adult age. If a student wants to use Myspace or Facebook, they should do it from home, not on campus. There is no educational value in either of the sites I mentioned, so there is no need to have them accessible on campus. In the same vein, would you consider a porno site educational? Of course not, so why would a social networking site that has a propensity to predators be educational?

Until universities are free from the strings of boosters, and money from other sources of influence then we cannot escape the fact that we have to listen to what they want us to do.
