- RIAA: the dinosaur that dosen't R.I.P.
-
If you haven't noticed by now, PHYSICAL MEDIA (records, tape, CDs) has all but disappeared from the delivery pipeline used to get copies of musical recordings to interested consumers. What exists today is an electronic digital file that, by its very nature, can be replicated and distributed indefinitely at zero cost to anybody.
Musical recordings can now be seen for what they really are: PROMOTIONAL MATERIAL used to interest consumers in whatever talents individual performers might have to offer. Once a fan base been created via these recordings, these same performers can go on tour and charge (often considerable) money for admission to their live performances.
The idea that one can walk into a recording studio, spend a few hours working, and then expect a fat royalty stream for life is now officially over. (And for 99 percent of working musicians everywhere, this fairy-tale option never existed in the first place).
Radio stations were once an avenue for new music to find an audience, but the total corruption (payola) of this business -- coupled with short playlists created by lawyers and accountants using statitical spreadsheet rather than deejays with taste and intituition -- has effectively silenced this outlet.
The RIAA and its fellow-travelers should stop attacking college downloaders and others who use the Internet to find and aquire musical recordings. The music business of the last century is GONE FOREVER and is not coming back no mater how vile the legal maneuvers to revive it become...unless you would like to live in a police state.
Our government DOES NOT EXIST to create eternal legitimacy for failed and/or obsolete business practices no matter how rational and justified these practices once appeared to be. - Posted by: dmennie Posted on: 05/11/06 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
