The ComputerWorld story is mainly a rehash of a post at the IE Blog, which discusses this issue and instructions that Gregg repeats in his article (which is good, btw). I included the link at the top of this post and event noted the changes for XP SP3 users specifically:

Do I need to do anything special before installing IE8 Beta 2?

Probably. The official caveats and install/uninstall instructions are on this fact sheet. I strongly recommend you read them before blithely beginning the installation. Pay special attention to the required updates. If you?re running Windows XP SP3, read these additional notes. [link to IE blog with instructions about XP SP3 issues]
