I agree, the average joe user is not going to understand
what the compatibility mode is. Most people don't even
understand that there is a difference between browsers.

Asking the user to choose how to view the website is just
going to promote people saying "oh this website is broken,
im going elsewhere " sort of behavior. Or even worse
people becoming frustrated and hear that IE8 sucks and
breaks everything. Thus no one will upgrade, just like the
Vista phenomenon.
