Not in original design spec
My guess is that it was part of the original spec but could not be coded and tested in time for release of Vista.

Meanwhile, what I don't understand is this:

You could unplug the external drive from your networked PC for 15 minutes, plug it into your Vista machine, and do an image-based backup. When the backup is done, you could plug thbe drive back into your network.

There. All done. Why is that not an option?
