Ross2000: Am I the luckiest guy in the world or are all these stories found on ZDNet and other sites you mention a load of exaggerated, sensationalist, reader-hungry rubbish?

Yes a little lucky, but probably more conscientious than most. Those that try harder and learn the basics, then pro-actively maintain their machines, minimalize their headaches. It's as simple as that. THAT however is NOT the majority of PC users. Power users, along with that less advanced class we'll call the conscientious ones, are not "average" users. The former group makes up 1% of the computing masses at best, the latter perhaps 5-10%. That's about it folks.

Ye: All of my systems (Windows, OS X, Linux, and Solaris) work fine. No muss, no fuss, no problems. It's good to be me.

Right, but then again, you can find no room for improvement even in the GUI(s), so you're about as made in the shade as they come. Case closed there. Beam up the borg Scotty -- er, Billy.

Ed: The surprise is not that these complex products occasionally need fixing, but rather that they work so well, so often, for so many people.

Hallelujah. I try to tell this to any client who'll listen, generally to no avail. But there's no point in downplaying the vast array and sheer amount of problems and issues that exist out there, on each and every platform. The reality is, the numbers are astronomical. I make my living fixing the errors of the "clueless fold," and I see no trailing off of work, or units in need of a little TLC magic.

There's a saying most of us live by doing this work: If it can fail, it will. If not today, then tomorrow. And that you can bank on it. Any experienced rig technician knows anything is possible, anytime, anyplace, anywhere. It's not quite as hodge-podged on the server-|-networking side, where systems are almost always better equipped and maintained, but pity the guys that address the masses needs day in and day out.

Tool on those electro-mechanical beasts long enough and you soon realize there can't be a God. He would never have allowed these things to have been birthed, and in need of such attention!

Forget all the hiccups that occur that end up wreaking havoc in layers of interactive complexity. Between the human "curiosity factor" and that >>two way<< magic called the WWW lurks the bigger pitfall: tempting reams of trouble for these already imperfect contraptions. That's PC power baby.

You know, I've yet to uncover even one machine error free through the years. Of course I know where to dig and peck, from experience if nothing else, like any other R&R pile driver. And neither would any of you, assuming you know how to lift the hood ever so lightly.

The good news is, most errors are minute and hardly matter in the bigger scheme of things. Most users aren't even aware such things are occuring with delightful regularity on their "squeaky clean machines." wink
