Distros and Repos
Hehe, I'm about as far from a newbie as you can get, and I can tell you that there may be hundreds of distros, but the four that matter (Red Hat, Suse, Ubuntu, Debian) all use repositories. I was glad to hear from another commenter that the new version of Yast provides better control over the update process, but that doesn't change the fact that the majority of GNU/Linux users are stuck with repositories that treat everything as a critical, which is simply wrong. At least Apple gives you the choice to turn off autoupdates for a specific program.
