Let me get this straight.
So the positive slant put on the MS method is due to the fact that there is plenty of reading involved to get it to work whereas the Apple method just works which is apparently not what you want. However if the problem outlined in this slanted comparison I just read is that Apple requires the user to read in order to know what's going on and possibly opt-out, then I don't see the problem because so does Microsoft. In the eyes of the beholder, opting in is worse!

So, non readers get everything from Apple. Good for Apple and the users. They unknowingly get their security updates and other Apple software as a bonus. However people with a little personal responsibility get what they want and only what they want. I don't see a problem with this. Microsoft's method leaves open a huge possibility that their system will go unknowingly unpatched.

In the end the point is moot. Most users (read consumers) will leave the default settings or pick the option with the biggest picture leaving them with a system that will update on their own.

Now, lets talk about Sun's Java updater.
