Ed, you make some interesting points, but I do have to take issue with your point about "who discloses" better. I remember an XP update not about six months to a year ago that came through as "critical". I installed and you know what? The "update" had one function and that was to verify that my version of XP was authentic. I guess it was "critical" to MS, just not to me. Additionally, I have noticed that sometimes we need the updates/hotfixes and their not pushed out. For instance, try adding 4GBs of RAM to your pre SP1 Vista machine without KB929777. This fix has been around for a while, but you have to go get it. This is just an example and yes neither system is perfect, but I believe you are waaaaay off to say that MS discloses better than Apple, both are pretty weak in that regard.
