Had a similar experience.
Don't recall what triggered it off, but had to reinstall the OS (Thank goodness for non-destructive System Recover!) to correct it.

It appears that (at least with XP) the OS is initially activated (by the OEM, in this case eMachines) with a Volume Licensing Key, not a consumer-level key, even though the latter is what is on the back (in my machine's case) of the case.

And yes, I've had trouble with nProtect GameGuard even on XP (thanks to GPotato's FlyFF). However, updating the program /manually/ corrected the problem. It is quite apparent that the company that made GameGuard is very much aware of the problem. Check their site.
