Already ran into this
I already had to deal with this Vista defect.

My ACER notebook came with XP pre-installed on a FAT32 partition.

I did the convert as I don't do anything important in Windows but this situation can cause huge problems.

What if an average user runs into this and does not read zdnet? They will be spending a few frustrating hours on the phone to MS tech support in India.

Microsoft recommends backing up all data before converting to avoid data corruption. What if the user has a nearly full HDD? How exactly is the average user going to back-up 20, 40, or even 100 GB of data? Will they be forced to go out and buy a removable USB HDD to accomplish this task?

After performing a Vista upgrade it's clear that Vista has no idea how to deal with FAT32 partitions.

The upgrade process was the most convoluted thing I've seen in a while. 5 years, $5 billion and that's the best they could do?
