Yale Patt is being foolish.
You cannot ignore the factors of time and money. In the real non-ideal world, their are many practical considerations that cannot be avoided.

Most programmers are average, which may not be good enough for "Yale Patt" but it is a fact of life.

Irregardless, if we want to take more advantage of multi-core CPU's we will need programmers that understand multiprocessing and multithreading better. It is difficult, and fewer programmers will be good at this, however this understanding will become more important in writing high performance software.

Getting programmers of this caliber will undoubtedly incur more cost. So you are left with the decision of either finding and paying for the necessary talent from a limited pool, or ignoring multi-core technology.

For many applications it will not matter. Servers already take advantage of multiple CPU's without new optimizations. Furthermore there is plenty of software out their that will not need the added processing power to be useful.

This topic only comes up again and again because the IT industry feeds on tales of doom and gloom. The sky is not falling, its just the winds that are changing.
