Cound not have said it better myself. Customers will ask for the dangdest
things that they will never use. They also never really know what they want until AFTER they have had some time with initial versions. Then, they will start thinking of all kinds of things that they forgot, and tell you they don't want things they asked for in the first place. It is an iterative process to get them to divulge all the details. If you try to get all of the details from them up front, you will only make them mad.

It is a disaster to try to get the details up front, then hold the customer to it and not develop anything else but what you agreed to up front, or charge extra for anything not in the original spec. You will likely end up with a failed project and a mad customer. Sure you can stick the original specs in their face and blame it all on them.
