Phenomenal article
Dion, this is a tour de force that will certainly be required reading at
Mashery and recommended reading for the dozens of customers
whose APIs we run.

Opening an API is indeed a business decision. And often the open API
leverages the services created in a previous SOA initiative - and leads
to an instant return on that SOA initiative.

As we often tell our prospects, "you probably have an API already and
don't know it. Any service you've opened for internal use or for a one-
off partnership before only needs to have the API management layer
added and you've opened the API distribution channel."

Thanks for this - it provides a much-needed foundation for the
essential dialog between the business side and the technology side of
businesses that are looking to grow their businesses and improve their
bottom line by distributing existing services to new markets and
better serving their existing ones.
