Corporate inability
Gates admits that Microsoft miscalculated the value of the advertising business model, again essentially their seeming corporate inability to measure the scale and power of the Web and its associated network effects.

There is a natural human tendency towards "target fixation;" fighter pilots need to be relentlessly trained to "check six."

Similarly, it's natural to pay attention to the prospects that you can control, or better yet dominate, and to discount the cases you don't understand.

Microsoft, after all, has been spectacularly successful at selling data-handlers (Information Age production economies feeding an Industrial Age distribution economy.) "Software" in the "this is a program" sense has made Gates the richest mouth on Earth, so don't expect him to readily switch over to thinking that there's anything more valuable than that kind of software.
