Education on Countering Threats
I applaud Richard for this important effort to be ?educational and expose attendees to new ways of countering threats.? The best defense is a good offense! We must continue to educate ourselves, to be prepared for the future threats, developing on the horizon. Individuals should constantly be looking for ways to protect their networks and systems. BE PROACTIVE. But being proactive doesn?t mean just setting up such things as firewalls and hoping they hold. It means also being able to ascertain what when wrong when your security fails and the bad guys get in. It means finding out who did what, when, and how and gathering evidence so that the guilty parties can be prosecuted and/or sued. It does little good to build a secure perimeter against attack if you don?t do something proactive against those who are constantly trying to get in. This is where training in doing high tech investigations becomes extremely important. I would note that the best training around in this areas is occurring in Cleveland, Ohio from October 30, 2006 from November 1, 2006 at the HTCIA International Training Conference and Expo. See http://ohiohtcia.org/conf_main.html for details.
