- OK, this isn't the most entertaining post, but this is what I try to do: After I've made sure I've transferred all data, settings, etc. to my new BSO (Bright Shiny Object), I 1st see if family or friends would like my previous gadget. If not I try to seek out a charitable org. who might be able to use it. If no charitable org. wants it, I check to see if my municipality has free proper disposal of such things. If no luck there, I take it to local technology recyclers/asset life cycle mgmt. companies and just give it to them if they?ll take it. If no luck after all that, then it?s the trash can and off to the landfill (I presume). Sometimes, manufacturers (e.g., HP) or service providers (e.g., Verizon Wireless) have their own programs and suggestions for such circumstances. Don?t forget that in donation, you can count it towards your charitable giving for taxes. I?ve repeated this process for over a decade with PDAs, desktop and laptop computers, printers and cell phones. Yeah, this might sound very ?do-gooder? and I guess it is? my philosophy is along the lines of Helen Keller?s famous quote: "I am only one [person]; I cannot do everything, but I can do something."
