Even with the limits of current AJAX technology, web apps are passing their
desktop equivalents in many other areas, and in others they are equal, or good enough and have the advantage of being online and available on any connected device.

It will be interesting what new features will be added to Firefox to make web apps even more interactive, with offline features and local data storage. I am sure that Google has engineers working overtime on this to have a cross-platform solution ready before the proprietary technologies in Vista have any chance of getting a foothold.

This is a battle that will be interesting to watch. Microsoft Windows only proprietary vs Firefox cross platform open/free (as in freedom).
