Coffee is about relationships . . .
I know it sounds old fashioned, but I know in blue-collar America (my own experiences), many relationships still revolve around the all-mighty coffee pot. From the tendency to congregate in the kitchen with friends after a meal, to the old men who meet at a diner every day, people meet at the coffee pot. There is still a fair amount of "counseling" in ministry over coffee.

If Starbucks can make, or keep, their stores that place where people meet people, or meet "the world" through news, they will continue to be a vital piece of the American culture even if they do shrink back to a sustainable number of stores.

To keep their coffee king, Starbucks has to remember all the reasons why people want the coffee to begin with. Many of those reasons are social-centric, not just for the caffeine. If they can maintain an environment that fills Americans' social needs, the coffee will forever flow.
