Gimmick
Mitch, MSWindows is the only platform that hasn't had this forever. Mostly it's not worth the trouble.

For Linux, you just add a line like this to /etc/fstab:

/dev/sdf0 none swap sw 0 0

(assuming you've set up sdf to be one of the flash drives that's worth doing this.) It's all automatic once you set it up; no user intervention required when you plug it in. (Unplugging it unexpectedly, of course, gets you into "where's that data?" issues.)

Apples are similar, best I can tell.

Offhand, it looks like Microsoft's main contributions are:
* A system that is so hungry for swap space that this is worth doing
* A catchy trademark
* Marketing
