Quick Friday afternoon answer.
Who's this We?

Oppressive action is often undertaken in the name of a community, with individuals compelled to follow.
A "community" can be defined by those to whom people are subject and by the rules with which people must comply.

If goods move from items in commerce to non-negotiable demands then more has been lost than gained. At least frivolous waste has the most effect on the wastrel alone.

There are already too many rules and too many socially accepted demands. And too much of the self-righteousness which makes them unquestioned.

In an article in the NY Times, the reporter noted that (new) joggers who jogged moderately had a moderately increased risk of heart attack, while those who jogged a great deal had a substantially increased risk of heart attack.

The reporter - without source - drew what to him was the only sensible conclusion: jog moderately because then the increase in risk will be only moderate.

Jogging was, of course, good for the community.

There are a large number of similar examples in public health in which supposed goods are not good and supposed bads are not bad.

But science cannot be allowed to change the required conclusions. People must be forced to give up the foods they like. They must be forced to do activities that hurt them. In order to fulfill the demands of those giving the orders.

Attempts to influence the public usually fail, which is the good news. When they succeed, the public can be harmed, either damaged or forced to lose something beneficial.

I would prefer knowing that efforts to create a We will fail. It's safer that way.
