FUD worked when the market was not moving at the pace it does today.

FUD and vaporware worked well then, but they work even better now.

The rapid pace of current development (at least in some quarters) means that instead of holding off [1] potential competition for part of a product cycle, a market leader can wipe out several product cycles altogether. Given the short-term returns that financial markets demand, that's enough to solve the "problem" permanently.
