I agree with every last word you wrote. I'll add that while it may sometimes be advantageous to do business in countries with odious regimes, cooperation with their repressive measures greatly reduces the cost to the regime of maintaining them. Therefore it stands to reason that if foreign investment is really important to China, the Communist regime is not really in a position to force foreign companies to cooperate with censorship or efforts to supress internal dissent. And it the government feels compelled to try anyway, it's better to leave and to force the government to pay the full price of their own stupidity than to become an accomplice to their crimes.
