Entertainment is an alternative to trust as a reason for giving attention, no?

Let's hypothesize a blogger whose style is funny or interesting, but whose views are accepted by almost no one. Not even as challenging.

A lot of traffic will not be a sign of trust.
But influence still exists. The blogger has called an issue to the attention of many. To the extent that data and others' views are reported, information has been spread.

It's possible to consider prominence, then, as an alternative to trust as a reason for influence, no?
This has some resemblance to the definition of a celebrity as one famous for being famous.

The implications can be applied to another quote:
"We may point to a site, like Robert Scoble's blog, when talking about Microsoft, and a lot of people may talk about Microsoft, giving Robert a very high authority score."

Let's consider the subgroup of people who consider everything Microsoft does to be oppressive if not illegal. This group may check on Mr. Scoble's blog not because they want to believe him, but because they want more information about counterarguments to rebut by mocking them.

Why would they choose Mr. Scoble's blog?
Because they have learned that others have found Mr. Scoble an acceptable source to provide views consistent with those of Microsoft's controlling managers.

How much authority does Mr. Scoble have with this group? None.
How reliable is he considered to be? About Microsoft, acceptable. About reality, not at all.

This situation, too, involves prominence for the sake of prominence.

The degree of sincerity and earnestness in interactions is a topic on which I'd appreciate your comments.
The variety of needs met by any defined event makes analysis difficult, I think.
