- There are many more advantages to consolidation...

Virtual switch technology...
Virtual switch technology, is far faster than anything Cisco(or other hardware router vendors) can push through your INTRAnet.... In the era of mashups... and multi database applications, you want internet connections that are at memory transfer speeds, not router speeds. Not only that... if you outgrow your hub/switch definitions... using an external router, you have to buy a new hub/switch... but with a virtual switch ... you just reallocate more memory to your virtual switch partition, reconfigure, and your ready to go...
Hardware service contracts... over the life of a server... this is big, big money..
Facilities cost... facilities costs are not free... especially for hardware equipment... cooling... humidity control... security ...lighting... over the life of a server... again... big, big money
UPS/battery backup... the more facilities... the more of this equipment you need to buy.... if you are a professional, you know that the $80 APC system is not going to cut it backing up a million dollars worth of equipment.... cut the number of facilities... and you don't need the UPS there ...
Manpower... Yes.. with most equipment, you can manage it offsite... but there are occasions when offsite support is just not sufficient... and you need someone to hit the reset button... replace the equipment... check the facility...etc... While consolidating doesn't cut the management manpower costs... it does eliminate some of the need for onsite support for the remote locations...
Network support... All sites need internet connections... adding a server to a remote site, means you need a much bigger pipe at that site... With consolidation... you eliminate the need to manage the IP traffic at each of these remote sites... and shift all your IP traffic management to the consolidated site... where you might have a better chance to share IP pipes... - Posted by: scotth_z Posted on: 11/02/09 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
