RIA ended up as toys, not tools
The other things that happened to RIA were security and abuse of the user.

Most RIA applications loose on the Web are simple toys, not useful to the viewer for the most part. Some of the few successes (like Netflix VOD) are characterized by heavy investment, hard work, and a monetary payback for all the effort and expense. But most RIA implementations are failures. I class all Flash-based homepages in this category. Few if any of them add value to the user, they are simply vanity-driven excesses of the company. If you disabled Flash (like I do) and use default access techniques, then you end up with a site that is simpler to navigate and faster to use.

Finally, security and stability have been big issues with RIA, as people find more vulnerabilities caused by Adobe and Microsoft browser applications. This leads to more people disabling RIA applets, and since most of them provide little value TO THE CONSUMER, it makes no difference to them.
