The current economic conditions have forced IT managers to look long and hard at every IT purchase. Naturally, virtualization has bubbled to the top as a popular investment for IT managers as it offers lower cost of management, fewer capital expenditures and an overall lower total cost of ownership. To date, much of that investment has been concentrated in the server market but the benefits of virtualization are popping up across the network infrastructure. A perfect example is the WAN Optimization market where hardware appliances have dominated. Now virtualized appliances offer an cost-effective and energy efficient alternative by enabling organizations to better utilize existing resources. Virtual appliances for application acceleration enable better bandwidth efficiency, leverage the scalability of the virtual systems they support, and free up valuable IT real estate, resulting in a 60% lower TCO than traditional hardware appliances.
